7th World Congress on Leishmaniosis
August 1st to 6th, 2022
Cartagena, Colombia

LeishVet and BrasiLeish work together to talk about animal leishmaniosis at WorldLeish 7 in Cartagena, Colombia
The 7th WorldLeish, the most important event on leishmaniosis, was celebrated from the 1st to the 6th of August 2022 in Cartagena, Colombia. In this edition, LeishVet and BrasiLeish – the Brazilian group of veterinarian researchers and experts on animal leishmaniosis – were invited to participate in the Congress and were included in the official program for the first time.
LeishVet members talked about several aspects related to animal leishmaniosis. Prof Gad Baneth started the day by addressing the main differences between canine leishmaniosis caused by L. tropica and L. major, and L. infantum infection. Prof Laia Solano Gallego joined him to discuss the main aspects related to L. infantum infection in horses, and Prof Guadalupe Miró presented updated data on the epidemiology of animal leishmaniosis in the Madrid area where the human leishmaniosis outbreak took place ten years ago. Prof Christine Pettersen (on behalf of Prof. Patrick Bourdeau and herself) discussed the sandfly skin parasite interface, and Prof Laia Solano Gallego and Prof Gaetano Oliva talked about the challenges encountered in concomitant infectious in dogs and cats with leishmaniosis. Finally, Prof Gaetano Oliva addressed one of the most frequent questions asked by veterinarians: is treatment in asymptomatic dogs with leishmaniosis necessary?
The morning continued with presentations of BrasiLeish members about animal leishmaniosis in Latin America. Dr Paulo Tabanez raised the question about the need for a change of mind when it comes to animal leishmaniosis. Dr Octavio Estevez discussed aspects of canine and human leishmaniosis in Latin America and Dr Filipe Dantas-Torres talked about canine leishmaniosis caused by L. braziliensis. Dr Tabanez and Dr Fabio dos Santos Nogueira described the diagnosis, clinical staging, and management of L. infantum in dogs in Latin America, and Dr Antonio Rodríguez-Sanchez talked about the scenario of canine leishmaniosis by L. infantum in Paraguay. Dr Victor Ribeiro closed the morning by presenting proposals for the control and management of canine leishmaniosis by L. infantum in Latin America.
The presentations were followed by a roundtable with LeishVet and BraziLeish, asking all the questions arose from the floor.
This meeting was an important step towards working together with the medical community to face the challenges posed by this neglected disease and important zoonosis. A One-Health approach is essential to ensure progress in the field of both human and animal leishmaniosis. We were thrilled to contribute to WorldLeish 7 and are looking forward to participating in other constructive projects in the future.

We are pleased to communicate that the ALIVE Congress (Animal Leishmaniosis International Veterinary Event), organized by the LeishVet group, was successfully held in Málaga between March 31st and April 2nd, 2022. Its international character has allowed a total of 197 (in person) and 202 (online) researchers, practitioners and dermatologists from 26 countries to come together for the event.
This congress featured Speakers, in this field, of recognized international standing, in addition to a large number of researchers presenting their research results through oral communications or posters.
For LeishVet and the entire Organizing Committee, it has been an excellent opportunity to meet again, to share knowledge and to be inspired by the enthusiasm, cooperation, continuous learning of the participants and, in short, to keep up to date with the advances in research and clinical management of a disease that interests us all as “leishmaniacs”.
We would like to give special thanks to all the Sponsors (ELANCO, IDEXX, LETI PHARMA, MSD, BOEHRINGER INGELHEIM, VIRBAC, ECUPHAR, CEVA, BIOCLIN VET, Consejo Andaluz de Colegios Oficiales de Veterinarios and the Colegio Oficial de Veterinarios de Málaga) and to the members of the Scientific Committee for their active participation and to all the participants for their contributions.

XII Southern European Veterinary Conference
October 20th, 2018
Madrid, Spain

Coinciding with the AVEPA-SEVC Congress held in Madrid last October, the LeishVet group celebrated its 10th anniversary with all the assistants preparing a very special symposium. The assistants, over 300 veterinarians, had the opportunity to enjoy an interesting scientific programme in which most of the LeishVet members participated: G. Baneth, P. Bourdeau, L. Cardoso, G. Miró, G. Oliva, MG. Pennisi and L. Solano-Gallego went through the different aspects of canine and feline leishmaniosis (from different reservoirs, new means of transmission, diagnostic techniques, treatments used and the resistency issues as well as prevention.) We were also honoured with three guests speakers: Dr. Fabio Nogueira (current President of Brasileis), clinical veterinary who spoke about the current situation of canine leishmaniosis in Brazil and the new treatment options approved by the government as an alternative to euthanasia. Dra. Mª Angeles Daza, spoke in second place, responsible for the Nephrology Department of the Veterinary Clinic Hospital of Madrid’s University of Veterinary Medicine (UCM), who explained the clinical treatment of the renal patient with leishmaniosis. Finally, Dr. Rogelio López-Vélez presented an interesting lecture regarding human leishmaniosis and answered G. Miró’s questions related to the zoonotic aspects of this important disease.
This scientific session was sponsored by Bayer Animal Health to whom we are very grateful for all the support given in the last ten years of acitivity. We also shared the day with representants from IDEXX and VIRBAC as sponsors of LeishVet since 2011 and 2017 respectively. We would also like to thank them both for putting their trust in our project.
